GUWAHATI: The PHE (Public Health Engineering) has 1,836 defunct water supply schemes in the state. The government has decided to renovate all these defunct schemes under the centrally-sponsored Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).

The JJM aims to provide tap water connections to all households by 2024.

The Kamrup district topped the list with 219 defunct PHE water supply schemes in the state. Next to Kamrup are Cachar with 216 and Karimganj with 133 defunct schemes. According to the department's statistics, Majuli, South Salmara Mankachar, and Charaideo districts have no defunct PHE water supply schemes.

According to official sources, the schemes are lying defunct due to widening of rural roads, old age of schemes, drying up of sources of water, damage due to floods and other natural resources, etc.

PHE has 6,027 functional water supply schemes in the state.
