GUWAHATI: Along with the rest of the country, the administration of booster dose vaccine amid rising COVID-19 cases started on Monday. Around 8,000 health and frontline workers along with citizens above 60 years of age suffering from comorbidities were administered the third dose or booster dose of COVID vaccine across the State.

The booster dose vaccination drive was launched at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) by State Health Minister Keshab Mahanta. Today, 4,577 health workers, 1,439 frontline workers and 1,905 people above 60 years of age with comorbidities were administered the booster dose. Those people who received the second dose of COVID vaccine before April 10, 2021, are eligible to get the booster dose. The number of this eligible population in Assam is around 2.60 lakh.

Health department sources said that many people want to take the booster dose before the due date. "If anyone takes the booster dose before the due date, he/she will not get the vaccination certificate. The date when the person received the second dose of vaccine is displayed in the CoWIN portal where the person's phone number is registered. So before the due date, we cannot give the booster dose to anyone," said health department officials..

Meanwhile, till today, around 7 lakh teens in the 15-18 years age group have been administered the first dose of COVID vaccine in the State. The vaccination drive for this age group had started on January 3, 2022, and the target set by the State Government is 20 lakh. Sources said that this vaccination drive is being carried out in schools and colleges. Vaccination centres have also been set up for teens who do not study in schools and colleges. But the pace of the vaccination drive is yet to pick up because they are not coming forward to take the jab.
