GUWAHATI: Assam has attained an unprecedented pace in the construction of roads and bridges.
According to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state government has been constructing one bridge and almost 15 km of road per day on average since 2021.
After taking charge in May 2021, the government has dedicated 1,236 bridges and over 18,000 km of roads to the people of the state as of December 2024. The Chief Minister said, “Things in Assam are now moving at a scale and speed unheard of previously. We’re capable enough to construct a bridge and around 15 km of roads a day on average.”
The road network in Assam comprises a total of 65,748 km, consisting of 3,927 km of national highways and 61,820 km of roads under PWD as of March 31, 2023.
The Chief Minister said, “I briefed Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on the roadmap of Assam’s road and bridge construction in my recent visit to New Delhi. The bidding process for the 121-km Rs 3,689-crore Ring Road around Guwahati has been completed, and its work will start within a month. Another mega project, the elevated corridor at Kaziranga, will be placed before the Union Cabinet soon. At present, the project is on the table of the Centre’s PIB (Public Investment Board). After approval from the board, the project will be placed before the Cabinet.”
