GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma briefed Union External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on the former’s recent visit to Bhutan, South Korea, and Japan and his tremendous appreciation for India’s growth story, which he witnessed firsthand during the visit.
The Chief Minister talked about Advantage Assam 2.0 with Jaishankar, besides its relationship with the Act East Policy and the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Policy.
The Chief Minister said, “We discussed development initiatives in Assam and its centrality to the success of Act East and BIMSTEC policies. At Advantage Assam 2.0, we will have the privilege of Jaishankar Ji elucidating the critical role of Assam in India’s Act East Policy.”
BIMSTEC is a regional organisation comprising seven member countries—Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
The objective of the Act East Policy is to promote economic cooperation, cultural ties, and the development of strategic relationships with countries in the Asia-Pacific Region through continuous engagement at bilateral, regional, and multilateral levels. This will enhance connectivity between the states of the northeastern region and other countries in its neighbourhood.
On February 3, the Chief Minister met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Cabinet colleagues, Nirmala Sitharaman, Nitin Gadkari, Piyush Goel, HS Puri, Jyotiraditya Scindia, and others, regarding Advantage Assam 2.0.
