GUWAHATI: Around 80 percent of the over nine lakh people, who had not been issued Aadhaar cards due to a blockage of their biometrics since 2019, have received Aadhaar cards now. The initiative taken by the state government with the Centre has made this possible.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "All thanks to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's efforts. Almost ten lakh people have had their biometric details unlocked and can now pursue their dreams unhindered. The affected people belong to all ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups."

The biometric details of these 9.35 lakh people were collected from February to August 2019. It was the time when the collection of biometric details for claims and objections relating to the NRC update was going on in the state. Due to a shortage of manpower, the same centres did the job of collecting biometric details for both NRC and Aadhaar cards, leading to a mess. These 9.35 lakh people had in no way connected with the over 19 lakh individuals whose names were not included in the NRC.

Due to the blockage of their biometric details, these 9.35 lakh people had to face a whole lot of problems-they could not open bank accounts, they were deprived of ration cards, their wards could not take admission in higher educational institutions, and the like.

Delving deep into the problem, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote a letter to the Centre on July 29, 2024, to solve the problem. After the appeal from the State Government, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs instructed the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) on August 27, 2024, to proceed with Aadhaar card issuance for these 9.35 lakh individuals.
