GUWAHATI: AADHAAR link must be a vital part of the PRIs (Panchayati Raj Institutions) and also in the overall process of rural development in Assam. This was stressed by Union Minister for Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, Giriraj Singh while addressing the media at P&RD (Panchayat & Rural Development) Office in Panjabari on Friday. State P&RD Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass was present on the occasion. Union Minister Singh also asked the Government of Assam to remove the bottlenecks, if any, in the Aadhaar-linking process.

He added that steps have been taken to ensure piped drinking water to each household in Assam, adding that many schemes have been taken to re-transform the fallow agricultural land as assets for the farmers.

Union Minister Singh added that a number of livelihood-support schemes to make women self-reliant will be implemented very soon. These programmes will be specifically dovetailed only for the women SHGs (Self Help Groups). The prime feature of these schemes is to empower each such SHG in such a way so that their yearly income can be at least Rs 1 lakh.

The Union Minister also stated that under these "Livelihood-support" schemes, the beneficiaries will be able to avail of easy banking facilities, various training programmes and also market-linkage plans."

The present government's policies have effected many significant developments in the rural development and panchayati raj sector. This is a big jump from the days of the Congress.

Singh added, "The 13th FC (Finance Commission) from 2011-2016, during the Congress regime, had accorded Rs 1,242 crore for Assam in the P&RD sector. However according to the 14th FC — after the BJP-led government took over the reins of power in the Centre, the share for the State in this sector rose to Rs 5,116 crore. In the 15th FC, Assam will get Rs 7,857 crore for P&RD.

The Union Minister further said, "Compared to the previous Congress regime, more rural roads were constructed under the Prime Minister Gram Sarak Yojana', and same is the case with respect to the rural house built under the 'Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana'."
