GUWAHATI: The state ministers discussed the issue of 'around 26 lakh people of the state not getting Aadhaar cards' with 27 organizations. The organizations said that citizenship had nothing to do with Aadhaar cards, and all genuine people should get Aadhaar cards.

Apart from Aadhaar cards, the meeting also discussed NRC re-verification. The committee headed by Minister Atul Bora interacted with the organizations to find ways to solve the problem in the issuance of Aaadhaar cards.

The government did form a committee to deal with issues related to Aadhaar cards and NRC links.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) locked the biometric details of over 19 lakh NRC applicants following a directive from the Supreme Court of India. These over 19 lakh people do not get their Aadhaar cards now. Some people did not apply for inclusion of their names in the NRC. Such people also do not get Aadhaar cards.

Talking to the media after the meeting, Minister Atul Bora said, "For not having Aadhar cards, around 26 lakh people of the state are not getting the benefits of various schemes. All organizations present at the meeting said that the 26 lakh people should get Aadhaar cards since Aadhaar cards had nothing to do with citizenship. The 26 lakh people not getting Aadhaar cards include many indigenous people also.

"The organizations present at the meeting are backing the State government in its move to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court of India to pave the way for the 26 lakh people of the state to get Aadhaar cards."

APW president Abhijeet Sharma, who was also present at the meeting, said, "We also discussed NRC re-verification. The problem is that the organizations seeking NRC re-verification are a divided lot. On the contrary, the parties and organizations opposing NRC re-verification are a united force."
