GUWAHATI: Assistant Solicitor General of India (ASGI) RKD Choudhury said that "the matter regarding the finalization of NRC is still sub judice before the Supreme Court, and therefore, the possibility of issuance of rejection slips appears to be remote at this point of time". ASGI Choudhury said this during the hearing of a case (WP-C/1754/2015) before the bench of Justice Suman Shyam.

Meanwhile, the bench asked the State Government to 'furnish a report on the number of cases that have been dealt with and disposed of by each of the Foreigner Tribunal during the period from April 1, 2021, till March 31, 2022. That apart, the latest status report on the infrastructural issues faced by the tribunals, if any, also be placed on record.'

Earlier, Senior State Government advocate D Nath said that the State government initiated steps for imparting training to about 100 Members of Foreigners Tribunals (FTs). The government counsel also submitted that 'the infrastructural issues of FTs have been substantially resolved across the state'.

Responding to the claim of the State Government counsel, the Amicus Curiae submitted that "there are reports of lack of proper infrastructure in some of the Foreigners Tribunals". He, however, submitted that "if the decisions taken by the high-level committee meeting on October 8, 2021, were fully implemented, the same would substantially improve the working condition in all the Tribunals."
