Guwahati: In a landmark achievement, Samagra Shiksha Assam (SSA) has recorded an unprecedented 70.63% student attendance across the state on the Shiksha Setu portal. This marked the first time the attendance has crossed the 70% threshold.
The data, publicly shared by Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, shows a total of 33,00,670 students present out of 46,72,953 enrolled on the day of the report, reflecting growing engagement and better monitoring on the Shiksha Setu portal.
Education Minister Ranoj Pegu congratulated all stakeholders, saying in a post on his X handle, "Grateful to the teachers and tutors of government and provincialised schools of Assam for achieving, for the first time, 70% attendance on the Shiksha Setu online portal. Appreciation also to @Samagra_Assam and the School Education Department for their efforts in improving student attendance across schools."
Schools in 21 districts, out of the total of 33 districts, recorded above-average attendance of students.
Three districts led the state with the highest attendance rates. Dhemaji district has a total enrolment of 1,15,443 students, of which 93,616 were present, reflecting an attendance of 81.09%; South Salmara-Mankachar has a total enrolment of 58,710 students, of which 46,363 were present, reflecting an attendance of 78.97%; and Majuli has a total enrolment of 30,619 students, of which 23,710 were present, reflecting an attendance of 77.44%.
Meanwhile, Dhubri recorded the lowest attendance at 64.90%, although the enrolment in schools is the highest among all districts, with a total enrolment of 3,16,120. However, the number of students present was 2,05,147.
Significantly, the students' attendance in schools in the Kamrup and Kamrup (Metro) were below the average attendance recorded on that particular day. Kamrup recorded an attendance of 69.89% and Kamrup (Metro) 66.98%.
The other districts recording poor attendance of students in schools are Sribhumi, Morigaon, Baksa, West Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, Goalpara, Cachar, Hailakandi and Sonitpur.
This achievement underscores the effectiveness of continuous monitoring, digital tracking, and grassroots efforts by educators and administrative teams under the Samagra Shiksha initiative.
Earlier, the SSA set the minimum attendance rate of students. As per the instruction of the MD of SSA, a minimum of 80% of students should attend school every day. If a student remains absent for 3 (three) consecutive days, it was termed the responsibility of the school authorities concerned to enquire as to why the student is absent.
According to the official order, the Director of Secondary Education and the Director of Elementary Education have been instructed to hold regular meetings with Inspectors of Schools, District Elementary Education Officers (DEEOs), and Block Elementary Education Officers (BEEOs) to ensure the effective implementation of this initiative.
Furthermore, school principals and head teachers have been entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring that attendance for all classes is accurately recorded every day.
In an effort to streamline and regularize attendance in schools, the authorities issued show cause notices to schools with low attendance.
