Guwahati: The Government of Assam has initiated preparations to effectively deal with any possible flood situations that may arise during the upcoming monsoon season. As part of this, an important meeting of the State-level Flood Management Coordination Committee was held today at the Assam Administrative Staff College in Guwahati under the chairmanship of the Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, Keshab Mahanta.
All stakeholders involved in flood management in the state reviewed critical aspects of advance preparedness and necessary action plans in the meeting to effectively tackle any possible flood situations during the upcoming rainy season.
The meeting organized by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department and the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) was attended by senior officials from the state departments involved in flood management, along with representatives from the NDRF, SDRF, Civil Defence, Indian Army, Indian Air Force, Food Corporation of India, Northeast Frontier Railway, Red Cross, Regional Meteorological Centre, North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC), National Remote Sensing Centre, Central Water Commission, NEEPCO, various central and state government agencies, and UNICEF. Officials from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and Revenue Circle Officers also joined the meeting via video conferencing.
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Keshab Mahanta called on NEEPCO to regularly share vital information about water levels in hydroelectric project dams with downstream district administrations. He also requested the Central Water Commission, Meteorological Department, NESAC, and the National Remote Sensing Centre to provide early warnings and alerts related to possible flood disasters during the upcoming monsoon to help the state government.
During the meeting, Minister Mahanta called on the district administration and stakeholders to be fully prepared for the floods in the upcoming monsoon season, based on past experiences. He also asked the representatives from different departments and organizations at the meeting to remain alert so that any potential situation during the monsoon can be managed promptly and in an organized manner, ensuring immediate relief to affected people. He urged all departments involved in flood management to be well-equipped and ready with necessary resources and arrangements.
Similarly, the minister directed the district commissioners and circle officers to complete field visits, surveys, deployment of adequate manpower, and training programmes at the district, revenue circle, and village levels to ensure readiness for rescue and relief operations. Reiterating that district administrations under the leadership of district commissioners have always played a key role in managing flood situations, the minister advised that proper arrangements for drinking water and sanitation be made in locations designated as flood relief camps in areas likely to be affected.
