GUWAHATI: Inaugurating the revamped Lachit Barphukan Police Academy at Dergaon today, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said he believed that it would be the number one police academy in the country in the next five years.

The first phase of the revamped Police Academy cost Rs 167 crore. The Union Home Minister laid the foundation stone of the second phase of the revamp of the police academy today.

Shah said, "The glory of the great legendary Ahom general Lachit Barphukan was kept confined in Assam for many years. He was one general who fought the Mughals bravely and defeated them. It's the BJP government that took the legendary general to the world stage. Efforts are on to conclude chapters on Bir Lachit Barphukan in the school syllabus in many states. Due to the efforts of the Modi government, today Lachit's biography has been translated into 23 languages and is available in libraries across the country."

Shah said that, free from agitation and insurgency, Assam is now going on a new path towards development. The peace that prevails in Assam has made it possible for the state government to sign MoUs worth around Rs 5 lakh crore during the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, he added.

In addition to that, Shah said, "The Modi government will bring in Rs 3 lakh crore infrastructure projects in Assam. These projects will be worth Rs 8 lakh crore and create a large number of employment opportunities for the youth of Assam."

In the past few years, the central government released Rs 4.95 lakh crore to Assam as devaluation grants and grants in aid. This is manifold higher than such grants released to the state during the Congress regime. In the past ten years, Assam made strides on all fronts. Even the crime graph is on the fall in the state. The conviction rate in the state, on the other hand, is going upward. In the past four years, the conviction rate increased in the state from five percent to 32 percent. If this trend continues, Assam will surpass the national-level conviction rate in the next few years. Earlier, Assam police spent most of their energy fighting insurgents. With the crime rate falling now, the state police force can afford to give more time for public services."
