GUWAHATI: The Assam Assembly witnessed a record number of suspensions of MLAs for obstructing the proceedings of the House today.
During the Question Hour, Speaker Biswajit Daimary suspended Congress MLA Abdul Kalam Rashid Alam, AIUDF MLA Ashraful Hussain, and Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi for obstructing House proceedings. Rashid Alam and Ashraful Hussain had to be marshalled out.
After the Question Hour, the House witnessed a ruckus, leading to its adjournment for twenty minutes when the AIUDF MLAs urged the Speaker to allow a motion on ‘breach of privilege’ they had moved against Minister Ashok Singhal for his alleged statement against the ‘miyan community’ at Dhekiajuli on March 3. The AIUDF alleged that the minister went against the integrity of the Constitution of India.
The Speaker told the MLAs that he did not find any merit in admitting the motion as the alleged incident had happened outside the House. The AIUDF MLAs then started shouting slogans and rushed to the well with placards, leading the Speaker to adjourn the House for twenty minutes.
When the House resumed its proceedings, the AIUDF MLAs started to shout again. Deputy Speaker Dr. Numal Momin attempted to calm the MLAs and told them to obey the rules of the Assembly and properly move the motion for the chair to think over it. However, the AIUDF MLAs kept on shouting slogans, and that made the Deputy Speaker suspend all the AIUDF MLAs for ten minutes. This is a record in itself.
