Assam: Average Daily Hours of Power Supply in State is Above National Average

GUWAHATI: The average daily hours of power supply in Assam were above the national average in the financial year 2023-24 – both in rural and urban areas.

According to statistics from the Union Ministry of Power, the average daily hours of power supply in rural Assam were 22.5 in 2023-24 compared to the national average of 21.9. Goa and Maharashtra had the highest average daily hours of power supply in rural areas with 23.8, and Nagaland had the lowest average daily hours of power supply in rural areas with 18.

In urban Assam, the average daily hours of power supply in 2023-24 was 23.8 compared to the national average of 23.4. However, the average daily hours of power supply in 2023-24 were 24 in Delhi, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana. Nagaland has the lowest average daily hours of urban power supply at 20 during that fiscal.

According to the Union Ministry of Power, as per Sub-Rule (1) of Rule (10) of the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020, the distribution licensee shall supply 24x7 power to all consumers. However, the State Electricity Regulatory Commissions may specify lower hours of supply for some categories of consumers, like agriculture. The rules are applicable across all states and for all areas, including urban and rural areas.

The national average hours for rural supply were around 22 in 2023-24, and in many states like Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, etc., the average daily hours of power supply in rural areas were above 23.

In FY 2023-24, the states of Nagaland, J&K, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana had average daily hours of power supply in rural areas below 20.
