Guwahati: With hardly one year to go before the general election to the Assam Assembly is held, the BJP-led NDA has registered a thumping victory in the Panchayat election. The result in Upper Assam indicates a shifting of voters’ support, as the BJP candidates won in most of the seats in this part of the state.
The Congress had won the Jorhat parliamentary seat in the Lok Sabha election 2024 by more than one lakh votes, but this time the BJP managed to wrest away the support of the voters. There are 16 Zilla Parishad (ZP) constituencies, of which 15 were won by the BJP and one by the AGP.
In other Upper Assam districts, a similar trend was witnessed. In Dibrugarh district, there are 22 ZP constituencies, of which the BJP won 19 and the AGP 3. In Tinsukia district, of the 22 ZP seats, the BJP bagged 21 and the AGP 1. In Majuli LAC, the BJP won in all 4 ZP seats. Also, all 8 ZP seats in Charaideo district were annexed by the BJP.
In Sivasagar district, Akhil Gogoi of the Raijor Dal won the Sivasagar LAC seat in the 2021 Assembly election. In this Panchayat poll, all 4 ZP seats went to the BJP. In Tezpur LAC of Sonitpur district, all 4 ZP constituencies went to the AGP and BJP, with both parties bagging 2 seats each. Significantly, the Bhomoraguri seat was wrested from the Congress by the AGP for the first time in decades. In Jagiroad LAC, the BJP made a clean sweep in all four ZP seats. In Golaghat district, the BJP was the winner in 17 of the 20 ZP seats and the AGP in the remaining 3.
In Sribhumi district, out of 16 ZP seats, the BJP was the winner in 11 and INC in 5 seats. In Bongaigaon district, the AGP-BJP combine bagged 8 seats, the Congress 1 and independent candidates 3 seats.
In Nalbari district, of the 12 ZP seats, the BJP won 11 and Congress 1 seat. In Bajali district, the outcome was BJP and AGP 2 each and independent 1.
The counting of ballots in the Panchayat election has been very slow, and counting was still going on in some districts at the time of filing of this report. According to sources at the Assam State Election Commission, the counting of ballots will continue on Tuesday in some Lower Assam districts.
