Guwahati: State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on Saturday clarified that the 25% reservation of seats for students from economically weaker sections of society or those below the poverty level (BPL) will be provided only in vernacular medium private schools.
Pegu stated, "We will implement the 25% reservation for students from economically disadvantaged and weaker sections of society in vernacular medium schools like Assamese, Bengali, and Bodo medium, etc. However, this will not be applicable in English medium schools."
The state government will provide fee reimbursement to the schools for providing the reservation to students from economically weaker families.
He gave examples of Assamese medium private schools like Sankardev Sishu Vidya Niketan and Jatiya Bidyalay and Bengali medium schools like Saraswati Vidya Niketan and UN Academy for Bodo medium.
