BOKAKHAT: An iconic historical bridge in Bokakhat is now in a dilapidated state. This bridge was constructed by the British around 4 kilometres from Bokakhat town, spanning the Diphlu River. Flowing from the Karbi Hills, the Diphlu is considered a lifeline of Kaziranga National Park, coursing directly through it.
The historic hanging bridge over this river is now counting its final days. Built 96 years ago in 1930 by the British, the bridge hangs supported entirely by two steel cables. Tourists from various places come to see this unique structure. After establishing tea gardens in the area, the British constructed this suspension bridge over the Diphlu River to transport goods for import and export. At the time, it served as the sole link between the then Mikir Hills (now Karbi Anglong district) and the surrounding regions.
Interestingly, until a few years ago, the British government used to provide financial aid for the maintenance of this bridge. But after that support ceased, the government of independent India turned its back on the structure. The bridge now is a disaster waiting to happen, causing concern among locals and organizations. Residents of the area are now forced to cross it dangerously using wooden planks.
Apart from the lack of repairs, erosion caused by the strong current of the Diphlu River also threatens the bridge's existence. Locals urged the district administration to take steps toward its preservation.
Constructed with the British vision of connectivity and commerce, this bridge, known as the 'Suspension Bridge,' had great potential to be included in Kaziranga National Park's tourism package. If the government had taken steps to restore it, it could have become an added attraction for tourists. But due to widespread apathy towards this heritage bridge, this iconic structure now faces inevitable destruction.
