GUWAHATI: Among other important decisions, the Assam Cabinet on Friday decided to add two additional reserved seats in medical colleges of the state for students from each of the six communities which are demanding ST status – Koch-Rajbonghshi, Tai Ahom, Moran, Matak, Chutia and Tea Tribes.

Briefing the media about the Cabinet meeting, Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah said that it was also decided to reserve six additional seats for MBBS course and three additional seats for BDS course for children of ex-Servicemen. In view of the shortage of doctors in medical colleges of the state, the Cabinet decided to increase the upper-age limit for joining service by two years across all categories, i.e, General, OBC/MOBC, ST and SC.

Mallabaruah said that in concert with the government's thrust on solar power generation, an agreement was signed today between the Assam Fishery Development Corporation and Assam Power Generation Company Limited (APGCL) according to which floating solar power panels will be installed in all beels. The APGCL will, however, have to ensure that no adverse effect is had on fish production and biodiversity due to the solar power panels, he added.

Further, Baruah informed that the Cabinet decided to grant Rs 25,000 each to 4,826 schools which obtained 'A+' grade in the Gunotsav 2022.

The Cabinet approved a loan of Rs 18.20 crore to the Assam Tea Corporation (ATC) so that it could pay 20 per cent Durga Puja bonus to its workers, he said. Mallabaruah said that in view Assam's reliance on fodder from other states, it was decided to set up an Assam Fodder Mission with a tenure of seven years to make the state self-sufficient in this sphere.

He added that an additional fund of Rs 46 crore was approved for the ongoing major water supply schemes of the PHE Department in the Jorhat, Hailakandi and Kamrup districts.
