GUWAHATI: A tense atmosphere is prevailing in Velera village of the Palasbari area in Kamrup district after a group of unidentified persons allegedly tried to convert some local Hindu residents to Christianity by enticement and threats.

According to sources, the group has been seeking to convert some local residents to Christianity for some time now. However, the locals refused to accede to their promises or buckle under threats to their attempts at conversion, and friction took place between locals and the group mentioned, sparking tension in the area. Locals have also demanded stringent action against the group for this alleged attempt at conversion. There were reports that some symbols of Christianity were also put up in the village a few days back.

The locals are said to have immediately informed the police, who arrived at the scene and took five persons of the group into custody. The police arrested five individuals, named Jayanta Das, Nayan Das, Hiten Das, Dhiraj Das, and Ashim Rabha. The Palasbari police have registered a case (494/24) against the group and started investigations.

Locals have alleged that a group of unidentified people has been active in the area for some time, trying to convert people to Christianity through hook or by crook. There is now suspicion at the movement of any unknown persons in the area, and the tense situation persists.
