Guwahati: There has been a considerable improvement in terms of the law and order scenario in the state, as the percentage of charge sheets filed and the conviction rate have gone up, and the crime rate has plummeted in the period from 2020 to 2024.
Data from the Assam Police show that the percentage of charge sheets filed was 47.80% in 2020. This has gone up to 66.71 in 2024. Also, in the first two months of 2025 (until February), the charge sheets filed are 73.90%.
In terms of the conviction rate, there is a similar trend noticed, as the number convicted in cases was 855 in 2020, which comes to 5.5%. Coming to 2024, the number of cases with conviction increased to 6764, with the percentage of 22.95 recorded. In the first two months of 2025, convictions in cases were recorded at 1026, at a rate of 24.79%.
As for the crime rate in terms of per lakh of population, it was 349.5 in 2020. This has gone down to 139.3 per lakh of population in 2024. Until the month of February this year, the crime rate was 123.8. This will lead to a growing sense of security for the people in the state and a better law and order situation.
