Assam: Crackdown against Poachers at Panidihing Bird Sanctuary in Sivasagar

SIVASAGAR:  The Forest Department of Sivasagar launched an intensive operation against poachers at the Panidihing Bird Sanctuary, located approximately 15 kilometers from Sivasagar town. According to forest department sources, acting on the instructions of Forest Officer Kushal Deka, Ranger Himangshu Neog, along with a team from Chitalia, was dispatched to the area. During the operation, the team successfully apprehended notorious poacher Pushpa Kamang and recovered several rare and endangered wild ducks in a deceased state.

The forest department, led by Ranger Mubid Ali, conducted the raid at Balijan within the Panidihing Bird Sanctuary and brought the deceased wild ducks to their office for further examination. After veterinary doctors conducted post-mortem examinations, the wild ducks were buried in a designated open area. The forest department has filed a case against the poacher under the Forest Act, and the offender has been presented in court, which subsequently sent him to jail, said the sources.

According to the forest department, with the arrival of winter, around 265 species of migratory birds flock to the Panidihing Bird Sanctuary from countries like Australia, America, Bulgaria, Siberia, and several others.
