Assam: Deori, Tiwa notified as mediums of instruction in LP schools in several districts

Guwahati: With the intent of preserving and promoting the Deori and Tiwa languages and ensuring that the students belonging to the Deori and Tiwa community can get education in their mother tongue or home language, the Department of School Education on Wednesday notified the medium of instruction in the Lower Primary Schools (Foundational stage) in 28 Deori LP Schools in the districts of Jorhat, Dhemaji, Tinsukia, Lakhimpur, Biswanath and Majuli and 98 Tiwa LP Schools in the West Karbi Anglong, Karbi Anglong, Morigaon, Nagaon, Kamrup (Metro), Hojai and Dhemaji districts.

Henceforth, the said 28 Deori LP Schools in the six districts of Assam shall be categorised as ‘Deori Medium Lower Primary School’, and 98 Tiwa LP Schools in seven districts of Assam shall be categorized as ‘Tiwa Medium Lower Primary School’ for all purposes, the notification said, adding that the order shall come into force from the Academic Session 2025-2026.

It should be mentioned here that, earlier, the Mising language was notified as the medium of instruction in 200 LP schools in eleven districts in the state. This will come into effect from Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

Talking to the media, state education minister Dr Ranoj Pegu said, “From today, the Mising language will be the medium of instruction in LP schools. Moreover, the Deori and Tiwa languages were today notified as mediums of instruction in LP schools in several districts.”
