GUWAHATI: Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu said that the certificate course offered by ITIs (industrial training institutes) will no longer be the dead end for higher education. Equivalent to HSLC (High School Leaving Certificate) courses, this certificate will let students undergo higher education with admission in Class XI.

In a similar announcement, Dr. Pegu said that the diploma programme holders from the polytechnic institutes will be treated as equivalent to HS-passed candidates. "This will let such diploma holders sit for JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) for direct admission into engineering colleges, apart from their lateral admission into engineering institutes," the minister said.

The minister further said, "We're going to introduce modern subjects like artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning, etc., from the high school level, apart from the traditional subjects. The central government has allocated budgets for the construction of tinkering laboratories in schools. However, our department is making strides on this front in collaboration with IIT Guwahati."

The minister further said that the state education department is going to introduce the basics of stock exchange, banking, financial services, insurance, etc., at the school level. "We have already signed an MoU with the NSE (National Stock Exchange) at the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit yesterday," he said.
