GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that had the district administrations strictly followed the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, the incidents of throwing beef in front of religious places would not have happened.

Speaking to the media today, the Chief Minister said, “A clause of the Act specifically mentions that in Hindu-populated areas, naamghars, mandirs, gurudwaras, etc., there should not be any slaughter of cows or consumption of beef within a radius of five km. With the district administrations not enforcing this clause of the act strictly, several unwanted incidents took place in districts like Dhubri, Hojai, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, etc., during the recent Eid. We’ve instructed the district administration to enforce this act strictly so that no such incidents occur in the future.”

The Chief Minister said that the state government noticed a section of people trying to foment communally sensitive activities in the past few days in the state. “The people who made attempts to foment such activities are the ones who have encroached upon lands in nearby tribal blocks, belts, PGRs, VGRs, etc. Taking this into consideration, we’ve instructed the district authorities to conduct a survey of people who have encroached upon lands in PGRs, VGRs, tribal belts and blocks. The government has decided to take legal action against such people barring those who have been residing on such lands for about three generations,” he said.
