GUWAHATI: The Assam administrative mechanism has almost collapsed across the state due to the failure of the e-office system. The technical glitch started in the evening of Saturday last.

With the central and state governments working together to fix the problem, the authorities in the state government expect the restoration of the e-office system by tonight or tomorrow.

The state government introduced the e-office system for fast-track disposal of all files online. The use of manual office files is almost a history nowadays, barring a few.

The e-office system covered the state secretariat, all offices of directorates, offices of the district commissioners, etc., in the state. Since last Monday, the disposal of office files has come to a halt, making the entire administrative system in the state suffer a major setback. The offices, however, dispose of a few important files manually in the old system.

Being the fag end of the financial year, February-March is a crucial period for the sanctioning of schemes, payment of bills, and whatnot.

According to sources, the main server of the e-office system of the state is in New Delhi. Due to a technical snag in the server in New Delhi, the e-office system in Assam has failed.

According to sources in the GAD (General Administration Department), the state government is in touch with the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, NIC, and RailTel Corporation to restore the e-office system. All of these have been working in unison in New Delhi to fix the problem. According to sources, RailTel Corporation, a Navratna PSU, has all along been maintaining the e-office system of Assam.
