Guwahati: Finally, the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) today declared the Panchayat election results for the members to the Zilla Parishads and Anchalik Panchayats in the state. Counting of ballots in the election started at 8 AM on May 11. The counting for a few Panchayats, mainly in Lower Assam, concluded on Tuesday morning.
Election was held for members of 397 Zilla Parishads, 2,188 Anchalik Panchayats and 21,920 Gaon Panchayats. The polling for the two-phase Panchayat election in the state was held on May 2 and 7.
According to ASEC, the BJP won a total of 274 seats in Zilla Parishads (ZPs). BJP’s alliance partner AGP secured 27 seats. The other parties contesting in the ZP election won as follows: INC 72, AIUDF 8, Raijor Dal 3, and independent candidates 13. The BJP-AGP alliance (NDA), thereby, bagged 301 ZP seats out of the total of 397 ZPs.
As for the members of Anchalik Panchayats (APs), the BJP won 1,261 seats and AGP 184. Combining the results of both alliance partners, the total number of AP seats bagged by them comes to 1,445. Other parties fared as follows: AAP 1, TMC 4, AIUDF 64, Assam Jatiya Parishad 3, INC 481, Raijor Dal 17. Independent candidates secured 173 AP seats. There were no validly nominated candidates for members in 3 Anchalik Panchayats in the districts of Darrang and Nalbari, and election to 1 (one) AP constituency was countermanded in the district of Sivasagar.
It is worth noting that this is the first time in the Assam Panchayat elections that the election of the members of Gaon Panchayats (GPs) was apolitical in nature. The candidates contesting in the GPs were not allowed to use their party symbols. They had to select one of the free symbols notified by ASEC.
With the completion of the counting process and declaration of results, the model code of conduct (MCC), imposed for the Panchayat election 2025, is now over. ASEC stated that the whole counting process was peaceful.
