Assam flood Aerial Survey by Governor Jagdish Mukhi

GUWAHATI: Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi on Thursday undertook an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas across the State. After taking the survey, he said that he would recommend to the Centre for finding out a permanent solution to the flood and erosion problems of the State.

Stating that only a permanent and scientific solution can save the State and its people from their catastrophic effect, Governor Mukhi said, "My experience over the last three years as the Governor of the State convinced me that every year flood creates havoc leaving people, animal and the physical infrastructures in tatter. Therefore, taking on the problem annually will not suffice; and therefore, I would recommend and reach out to the Centre for its help to find out the permanent and scientific solution to this perennial problem."

Governor Mukhi added, "Every year, the perennial floods and its resultant effect on land is causing widespread erosion which have had its toll on the socio-economic condition of the State. Therefore, a long and timebound approach to address the problem and find out a permanent and scientific solution is of paramount importance."

He also observed that though the rivers like the Brahmaputra, Dhansiri, Jia Bharali, Kopili, Beki, Gaurang, Kushiyara and others are the lifelines of the people of Assam, they need to be tamed during the monsoon season; and for that, a long-term exhaustive study is required.

Governor Mukhi undertook the aerial survey of the prevailing flood situation in Baksa, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Goalpara, Dhubri and Udalguri districts; and asked the government to reach out to every affected person and ensure that relief materials reach to him or her; and nobody is left hungry.

Since the ongoing flood took a heavy toll on the animals, he also asked the government to ensure safety to the animals and provide food to those animals taking refuge on high lands. He also said that as the fury of the flood rendered several thousand of the people homeless, the government would ensure helping the people in reconstructing their houses once flood water recedes.

As the State is battling against the twin problems — namely flood and COVID 19 pandemic, Prof. Mukhi said that in this extraordinary situation every effort is being made to reach out to the people adhering to all safety protocols so that the pandemic does not further flare up; and the people can be rescued and re-capacitated with necessary government intervention during this deluge.

At the same time, he called upon the people to extend all cooperation to the government agencies to bail out the State of the current situation.

Chief Executive Officer ASDMA, M.S.Manivannan also accompanied the Governor during his visit.
