Assam Flood death toll rises to 13 during the last 24 hours

GUWAHATI: With the death of one more person at Nazira in Sivasagar district during the last 24 hours, the toll in floods across the State rose to 13 on Tuesday. On the other hand, the main rivers have been flowing above the danger levels following heavy rainfall at several places.

The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger levels at Dhubri and also Neamatighat in Jorhat district; the Dikhow and the Disang (at Nanglamuraghat) in Sivasagar district; the Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat district and the Jia Bharali River at NT Road crossing in Sonitpur district.

Altogether 36,707 persons have been affected in 99 villages or localities of seven Revenue Circles across the districts of Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, and Sivasagar. The floods have also affected 4,329 hectare cropland. As many as 14,485 people have been affected in Dhemaji district alone.

Nine relief camps have been set up giving shelter to 1,071 persons including 142 children.

According to the flood bulletin issued by the ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority) on Monday, many embankments, roads, bridges and culverts have been damaged by the floods.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall at most places in Assam and Meghalaya on Wednesday; with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall.
