GUWAHATI: The flood situation remained grim on Sunday with 6,80,931 persons affected in 1,073 villages under 36 Revenue Circles (RCs) across 17 of the 33 districts in Assam.

The maximum number of 3,98, 279 people have been affected in Barpeta district followed by 87,044 in South Salmara; 28,090 in Dhemaji; 27,470 in Dhubri; and 24,324 persons in Moigaon district among others. Altogther 4,852 are taking shelter in 53 relief camps.

The Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Naematighat (Jorhat) and Dhubri; the Jia Bharali at NT Road Crossing in Sonitpur, and the Kopili at Dharamtul in Nagaon. The toll remained at 37.

Further, 47, 175.93 hectares of crop land has been affected.

In Kaziranga National Park, while 23 camps are affected; three have been vacated. Altogether 44 wild animals have been affected due to floods and vehicles, stated the DFO, Eastern Assam Wildlife Division. In Pobitora WLS, while 12 camps are affected; two have been shifted.

Though three persons died due to drowning during the last 24 hours at three different places, the ASDMA (the Assam State Disaster Management Authority) daily bulletin clarified that these deaths were not due to the floods. Of the three drowning casualties, one has been reported from the Lahorighat RC of Morigaon district, another from Sivsagar RC, and the other from Demow RC.
