GUWAHATI: A division bench of the Gauhati High Court comprising Justice Suman Shyam and Justice Arun Dev Choudhury has asked the court’s registry to take necessary steps for listing all 20 pending criminal petitions/criminal review petitions against MPs and MLAs of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Mizoram before a special bench within ten days from December 9, 2024, after obtaining necessary approval from the Chief Justice. Once these matters pending at the principal bench of this high court are listed, it would be expected that the special bench so constituted for the purpose shall take all possible steps for their expeditious disposal.

The counsels of all four states submitted before the bench that they were yet to receive the July 25, 2024, report on the status of pending cases in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Mizoram submitted by the Register General of the Gauhati High Court. The bench ordered that the copies of the July 25, 2024 report be furnished to the additional advocate generals of the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Nagaland within a week from December 9 so as to enable them to come up with their responses.
