Guwahati: Harmeet Singh officially took charge as Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam from outgoing DGP Gyanendra Pratap Singh at the Assam Police headquarters in Ulubari on Wednesday.

In addition to his new responsibility as the Assam DGP, Harmeet Singh, an IPS officer of the 1992 batch, will continue holding multiple key positions, including those of Director General of Civil Defence and Commandant General of Home Guards, Special DGP (Headquarters), Special DGP & Director, Fire and Emergency Services, and Special DGP (Border).

Taking over charge from GP Singh, the new DGP said, “In the last two years, there has been a transformation of Assam Police, with the vision of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for a safe and secure Assam and a citizen-centric delivery system of police that will work for the benefit of the people. The efforts for change are ongoing, and the statistics reveal this transformation. I was part of the transformation process, and we will continue with the vision of the CM. We will continue our efforts until we become one of the top five police forces in the country, and then we will strive to emerge on top. Our objective is the people’s welfare and to work for their benefit. We are totally approachable; we are people-friendly, and we will continue working the way we have worked.”

Having served as DGP of Assam since February 1, 2023, GP Singh has now been appointed as the Director General (DG) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). He was honoured with a grand farewell at a function held at the 4th APBn headquarters in Kahilipara on Wednesday morning.

In his farewell address, GP Singh extended his gratitude to all police officials for their unwavering support during his tenure. He also acknowledged the continued efforts of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in strengthening the Assam Police and expressed confidence in the bright future of the force.

GP Singh urged officers to remain good human beings, prioritize their health, and uphold their service with integrity.

“I will continue to associate with Assam Police and the people of Assam.... People of Assam can think of me and remember me as an adopted son of Assam,” he stated.

GP Singh also paid homage to the martyrs of the Assam Police at the Swahid Bedi and expressed heartfelt thanks to his colleagues.

Expressing gratitude to GP Singh’s leadership, Harmeet Singh noted that the Assam Police made significant strides under him. “His guidance will remain invaluable as we work towards further strengthening the force,” the new DGP stated.
