Guwahati: Following a meeting of the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) Div. II today, it was decided that the exams of the remaining subjects of Higher Secondary 1st year in 2025 will not be held. The reason given for the cancellation of the exams is that the teacher community will be engaged in the Panchayat election process, which is likely to continue until May 20, 2025.
However, all the students who have appeared in the examination of the subjects held in the month of March, 2025, will be allowed to appear in the HS Final Examination, 2026.
It should be mentioned here that the HS 1st year exam 2025 started on March 6 and was scheduled to end on March 29. But, on the discovery of a question paper leakage , the exams of different subjects scheduled to be held from March 24 to 29 were all cancelled.
Subsequently, a meeting was held by ASSEB on March 24 on the fate of the remaining exams, but no decision was arrived at. The board again held a meeting on Friday, April 4, in which it was decided that the remaining exams will be scrapped.
In the meeting today, it was pointed out that, consequent to the declaration of the dates of the Panchayat Election, it was obvious that the teacher community of the state shall be engaged in preparatory works for the election, training of polling/counting staff, conduct of the election and counting of votes, etc., a process that is likely to continue up to May 20, 2025.
It was decided that, in this scenario, it would be difficult for the institutions to hold the examinations before completion of the election process, and it will be too late to conduct the remaining examinations after the election process. Therefore, the Board decided to cancel the examination of the remaining subjects of HS First Year Examinations, 2025.
However, regarding the future of the students, it was decided that all the students who have appeared in the examination of the subjects held in the month of March, 2025, will be allowed to appear in the HS Final Examination, 2026.
After the meeting today, it was stated that the HS 1st year (class XI) examination is basically a school examination. Until 8 years back, the institutions were conducting the annual examination of class XI on their own. But it was observed that the standard of questions set by the institution and the inclusion of topics in the question papers were not uniform. In view of these, for the last 8 years, the board (then AHSEC) has been providing question papers to maintain a standard pattern as well as to allow the students to be acquainted with the standard of HS Final Examination and also for self-appraisal. However, the examination was conducted like a school exam, only without any restrictions.
With this objective in mind, the board decided that if institutions or students want to analyse themselves regarding performances of the remaining subjects, they may collect the question papers from their respective lead college for study and practice.
However, the institutions against whom an investigation is going on for breaking the seal of question paper packets before the scheduled date and time will not be allowed to collect any packets of question papers from the lead college for study and practice.
Regarding the issue of mark sheets to students who appeared in the Class XI examinations this year, the respective institutions will be authorized to download the mark sheets from the website of ASSEB, Div.-II.
As for the marks against the subjects for which examinations will not be conducted, they are to be provided on the basis of the performance of the student in the unit test or half-yearly examination or the average marks obtained by the candidates in the subjects for which examinations were held as per schedule or any other suitable method.
