GUWAHATI: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Partha Sarathi Mahanta on Saturday officially took over charge as the new Commissioner of Police at the Police Commissionerate of Guwahati, succeeding outgoing Commissioner Diganta Barah.

Addressing the media after assuming the important post, Mahanta said, "We want to reassure the public that the city police will continue to focus on crime control, according to the official mandate, the government's orders, and regulations."

He further said, "Policing is a team effort and a continuous process. It requires collaboration and cannot be accomplished alone. Even when individuals leave, the overall work pattern remains unchanged. Therefore, policing requires a coordinated effort."

"The city police's mandate remains unchanged, with a continued focus on serving the people of Guwahati and the public at large. Our primary objective is to reduce crime rates and create a crime-free environment, as entrusted to us by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The police are committed to working tirelessly to achieve this goal, ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens. One of the biggest factors contributing to our success is the support we receive from the public. The police department cannot effectively carry out its duties without the cooperation and assistance of the people," the Commissioner of Police added.

On his first day as Guwahati's Police Commissioner, Partha Sarathi Mahanta introduced a dedicated WhatsApp helpline, allowing citizens to easily submit grievances and queries. The helpline number, 6026900651, will be available 24/7, providing citizens with direct access to the police for immediate assistance.

"We want the public to feel comfortable sharing their concerns with us. Rest assured, we will take prompt action on all grievances," Mahanta stated, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in addressing rising criminal activities in the city. He reassured the people that crime control would remain a top priority for the police force.

Mahanta also highlighted the city police's success in tackling drunk driving, with only 94 cases detected during a rigorous New Year's Eve crackdown. He said the police's appeal to refrain from drunk driving had achieved its objective, as people seem to have responded. He assured that efforts would be intensified to curb day-to-day crimes like chain snatching, mobile thefts, and traffic-related issues.

As the new city police commissioner, Mahanta stressed safety of the residents, transparency, and community collaboration in tackling crime. The helpline also marks a significant step towards more accessible and responsive policing in Guwahati.
