Assam lifts ban on movement of vehicles to Meghalaya

GUWAHATI: After six days of enforcing a ban following the violence that erupted in Mukroh on the inter-state border, the State government has permitted light vehicles registered in Assam, including private ones, to enter Meghalaya from Sunday onwards.

According to a senior police officer, this decision has been taken because the Meghalaya Police has assured that they would provide security to vehicles registered in Assam and ensure their safety.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly (ALA), Dr Numal Momin has said that being neighbouring states, Assam and Meghalaya must maintain cordial relations with each other.

Talking to the media on Sunday, Momin said that the recent incident at Mukroh was an unfortunate one, but the culprits, whosoever they may be, will be punished as several probes have been initiated by the State government.

He said, "Meghalaya is a tribal state, and our Karbi Anglong is also a tribal autonomous council area. There may be differences, but these will have to be resolved through discussions. I feel that the Chief Minister has taken several steps to restore peace and get to the bottom of the incident. I am hopeful that the issue will be resolved soon through fruitful discussions."

The Deputy Speaker of the ALA appealed to the border area residents of both states to maintain peace and tranquillity.
