GUWAHATI: Fully satisfied with the remarkable performance of the Assam government in the implementation of the PMAY-G (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin) scheme, Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan handed over sanction letters for 3.76 lakh more PMAY-G houses to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on the dais today.
The Union minister gave this performance incentive to the Chief Minister at a function regarding the house-warming (grihapravesh) ceremony of 55,000 PMAY-G houses in Guwahati today. The Union Minister also launched 'Lakhimi Mistri', a woman mason initiative under PMAY-G, and a few other schemes of the Department of Agriculture.
Chouhan said, "Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma is one of the most industrious chief ministers of the country. The present trend goes that many other states in the country have started to emulate the schemes initiated by the Assam government. The government of India is committed to ensuring that not a single family in the country should live in a kutcha house. To make this commitment really happen on the ground, the government has relaxed the eligibility criteria for PMAY-G houses."
To commemorate its launch, the Union minister distributed safety kits to five women to be trained under the Lakhimi Mistri initiative.
On Assam's agriculture, Chouhan said, "The lands of Assam being fertile, the yield is more here. The state is exporting ginger, turmeric, pepper, pineapple, etc., to the rest of India and abroad. Our next step is to bring the agricultural scientists from their laboratories to the fields to advise farmers. For Assam, we'll form 56 teams of scientists to roam around in the villages to give farmers agricultural tips for better yield."
Earlier, speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "Around 26 lakh people are eligible to get PMAY-G houses in the state. The construction of over 20 lakh such houses has been completed. In January this year, Union minister Chouhan sanctioned three lakh more PMAY houses. I requested the Union minister to give sanction letters for the remaining three lakh PMAY-G houses. Apart from the 26 lakh PMAY-G houses, we're now preparing a new list of PMAY-G eligible beneficiaries."
On the Lakhimi Mistri scheme, the Chief Minister said, "Under this scheme, the government will impart training on masonry, carpentry, electrician etc., to rural women. After acquiring such skills, women can earn an extra buck and help develop the rural economy."
He said that with the panchayat poll over, the government is in the mood to work. "We are going to fulfill all the assurances given in the run-up to the panchayat poll. We've already made the announcement of the subsidized rates of masoor dal, sugar and salt. We're going to reduce the price of LGP cylinder by Rs 300 and pay Rs 10,000 each to 30 lakh women under the Mukhya Mantrir Mahila Udyamita Asoni, etc."
