GUWAHATI: The Union Cabinet has given its approval to the setting up of a new Brownfield Ammonia-Urea Complex at Namrup in Assam. This move will meet the growing demand for urea fertiliser in the Northeast, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, etc.

Chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet today approved the proposal for the setting up of a new Ammonia-Urea Complex of 12.7 lakh MT annual capacity of urea production within the existing premises of the Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation Ltd (BVFCL). The total project cost is around Rs 10,600 crore. The tentative time schedule for the commissioning of the project is 48 months. A joint venture will be floated to execute the project.

The equity pattern of the proposed joint venture will comprise a 40 per cent share of the Assam government, an 11 per cent share of BVFCL, a 13 per cent share of Hindustan Urvarak and Rasayan Ltd, an 18 per cent share of National Fertiliser Ltd and an 18 per cent share of Oil India Ltd (NFL).

The project will increase the domestic urea production capacity in the country, especially in the northeastern region.

It will also open avenues for additional direct and indirect employment opportunities for the people of Assam. It shall help achieve the vision of self-reliance in urea in the country.

BVFCL is a government-owned fertiliser company known for producing indigenous urea using natural gas. It is considered the first factory in India to do so.

In December 2024, the Assam government approved an equity investment of 40 per cent worth Rs 1,272 crore in a joint venture to build the fourth unit of BVFCL to revitalise its operation and give it a fresh lease of life.

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to the Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister for approving the Namrup IV Ammonia-Urea Complex worth Rs. 10,600 crore. “This project will be a game changer for the Northeast, provide thousands of job opportunities and propel growth in Assam.”

Meanwhile, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Prime Minister for this welcome gesture, fulfilling the long-standing aspirations of the people of Assam. “This landmark project will not only strengthen the fertiliser security in the region but also significantly boost the growth and socio-economic wellbeing of our farmers,” he said.
