Guwahati: The central government has entrusted National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) with the work of developing the road from Silchar in Assam to Jiribam in Manipur. The estimated project cost for four-laning of the existing road is pegged at Rs 733 crore.
According to NHIDCL sources, international competitive bidding was invited for the 4-laning of the stretch of NH-37 from Silchar (near Budha Nagar) to Jiribam in the states of Assam and Manipur under NH (Original)-NE on Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) (Pkg-2). The proposed four-laning project, comprising a length of 13.09 km, will be constructed on a design, build, operate, and transfer ('DBOT Annuity' basis).
The sources further said that the package has been taken up for the development of road infrastructure in Barak Valley and to facilitate cross-border transportation to Manipur.
Recently, during the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit in Guwahati, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that road development works in Assam amounting to Rs 80,000 crore would be started shortly. He also shared details of proposed construction works costing Rs 55,000 crore. He had also announced a new highway from Guwahati to Silchar via Barapani at a cost of Rs 25,000 crore. Later, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma commented that, once completed, this will be the first expressway in the Northeast region.
