Assam: Now, fake dentists pose a threat to public health

GUWAHATI: Now, fake dentists have made inroads into rural Assam, let alone fake MBBS degree holders.

Without any valid qualifications and registrations, a section of fake dentists has been running their chambers in rural and semi-urban areas in the state. The health authorities in the state seem to be reluctant to act against the fake dentists even after affected people lodged several complaints.

The Barpeta Dental Surgeons’ Association (BDSA) has to come forward against the menace of fake dentists. The association has published the names of at least 17 fake dentists practicing in different areas in the district. What is surprising is that such fake dentists also practice near the Barpeta Medical College and Hospital.

According to the association, they lodged complaints against the fake dentists before the District Joint Health Director several times, but to no avail.

According to sources, a section of brokers take gullible dental patients to the fake doctors where they get treatment at cheap rates. However, the practice of such treatment under fake dentists is fraught with the risk of critical health hazards.

The modus operandi being followed is: some of the fake dentists collect fake certificates from some private dental colleges of UP, Bihar, etc. Some of the fake dentists take the certificates of some dentists of other states on rent and practice in Assam.

Assam is not in dearth of fake MBBS doctors, fake dentists and fake pharmacists, who pose a serious threat to public health. Such fake business takes place in the state taking advantage of some loopholes in the monitoring mechanism.
