GUWAHATI: State Panchayat and Rural Development (P&RD) Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass has dropped a broad hint that the forthcoming panchayat poll in the state will be of two phases, and that the issuance of poll notification may be in the first part of January 2025.
Speaking to The Sentinel, the minister said, “The draft electoral roll for the panchayat poll has already been published, and the publication of the final electoral roll will be on December 28, 2024. The Assam State Election Commission (SEC) will conduct the election. It will issue a poll notification after the publication of the final electoral roll. The election may be in two phases, as it is a big exercise. The AXX (Axam Xahitya Xabha) will hold its biennial conference from January 31 to February 4, 2025. Srimanta Sankardev Sangha will also hold its conference from February 6 to 9, 2025. Since these two conferences are big ones involving large congregations, the government’s view is not to make the dates of the poll and these two events clash.”
The state has 2,193 gaon panchayats comprising 21,930 wards, 181 APs (Anchalik Panchayats), and 393 Zila Parishad (ZP) constituencies after the recent delimitation of exercise in 27 districts, excluding the six schedule areas.
According to the draft electoral roll for the panchayat poll, the state has 1,75,54,589 electors.
