Guwahati: On receiving the nod from the Assam government, the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) has started the preparations for the next panchayat election slated for 2025; the process of preparing panchayat-wise electoral rolls has been put into motion. For the preparation of the electoral rolls for the next panchayat poll, the ASEC has issued an official notification in this regard.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had indicated that the entire process for the panchayat poll will be completed before February 10, 2025.

Panchayat polls are the biggest democratic exercise in the state, and the maximum number of people in rural areas are involved in the process, starting from the grassroots level. As the five-year terms of the panchayats in Assam are already over, the next panchayat poll is necessitated at the earliest.

According to the notification by ASEC, the publication of draft electoral rolls will be done on December 11, 2024. The period of filing claims and objections on the draft electoral rolls will start from December 14 and end by December 21, 2024. The authorities concerned have to dispose of all claims and objections between December 22 and 26, 2024. After the disposal of claims and objections, the final electoral rolls will be published on December 28, 2024. Based on the fresh electoral rolls, the panchayat election will be held.

The ASEC notification said, “As the State Government amended the Assam Panchayat Act, 1994, incorporating a new section 3A in the Act in October, 2023, constituting District Delimitation Commission (s) for the Delimitation of Gaon Panchayat, Anchalik Panchayat & Zilla Parishad Constituencies, and started the process of Delimitation, the election to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), which was due in December, 2023, was delayed.”

“After completion of Delimitation exercise and issue of notification(s) by the District Delimitation Commission(s), the Commission hereby notifies that respective District Commissioner shall prepare and publish the list of voters for the district as a whole including the erstwhile civil sub-divisions (presently co-district) as per the procedure spelt out in Rule 12(2) of the Assam Panchayat (Constitution) Rules, 1995, for holding Panchayat Elections for the posts of Ward Member of the Gaon Panchayat, Member of the Anchalik Panchayat and Member of the Zilla Parishad, with date of eligibility of the voters as on January 1, 2025, incorporating the fresh delimitation of PRI constituencies,” the notification further read.
