Guwahati: The poll atmosphere for the Panchayat election 2025 is heating up in the rural areas of the state where the poll will be held.
The Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) is all set to conduct the polls in two phases—on May 2 and 7—in 27 districts in the state, barring sixth schedule areas where there is no Panchayati Raj system.
According to ASEC, the list of the final contesting candidates has been drawn up, and a total of 6,486 candidates will be contesting for membership of Zilla Parishads and Anchalik Parishads. Other than Zilla Parishads (ZPs) and Anchalik Parishads (APs), elections will also be held for 21,920 Gaon Panchayat members. The total number of Gaon Panchayats (GPs) in the state is 2,192, with each GP having 10 members each. The contest for members of GPs will be apolitical, and candidates will not be able to use any political party symbol. However, candidates for members of ZPs and APs are contesting on the party symbol of the political party to which they are affiliated.
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has already started participating in political rallies, starting from Upper Assam, to garner support for BJP-AGP alliance candidates. He will campaign across the state in the coming days leading up to the Panchayat polls.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has also started campaigning for the panchayat polls, and he addressed several rallies in Upper Assam districts on Friday.
Meanwhile, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah, along with Congress MP from Assam and deputy leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi, has already embarked on the campaign trail for the panchayat polls. On Friday, both senior Congress leaders together addressed rallies at Titabor in the Jorhat district.
AGP president Atul Bora and working president Keshab Mahanta also campaigned in Upper Assam in support of AGP-BJP candidates contesting in the polls.
Polling will be held from 7.30 am to 4.30 pm on May 2 and 7. The counting of ballots will start from 8 am on May 11.
