Assam: Phase II Panchayat Poll Campaign Ends; Voting Scheduled for May 7

Guwahati: With the campaigning for the second phase of the Panchayat election coming to an end today, the stage is all set for the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) to conduct the polling on May 7. The polling for the first phase was held on May 2, with sporadic incidents reported. This led to repolling being conducted in 44 polling stations on May 4.

To ensure the free, fair and peaceful conduct of the second phase of the two-phase Panchayat Election 2025, State Election Commissioner Alok Kumar held a video conference with the Assam DGP, Home & Political Department officials, Guwahati Commissioner of Police, concerned District Commissioners and Superintendents of Police on Monday. During the video conference, the State Election Commissioner discussed and emphasised taking all possible steps to prevent untoward incidents on the poll day and ensure peaceful and conducive conditions for a free, fair and efficient conduct of Panchayat Election Phase II.

The second phase of the Panchayat poll will be held in 13 districts of the state, namely Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Bajali, Nalbari, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon and Darrang on May 7, from 7.30 am to 4.30 pm. The 13 districts are located in Middle and Lower Assam.

The total number of electors in Phase II is 91,31,127. Polling will be conducted in 12,130 polling stations.

On the last day of the poll campaign on Monday, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed three election rallies in Nityananda in the Bajali district, Chaygaon in the Kamrup district and Nellie in the Morigaon district. Addressing the people gathered in the rallies, the CM said that the Congress does politics of ‘lungi and dhoti’, but the BJP does politics based on development.

AGP president Atul Bora today addressed rallies in Sonapur in the Kamrup (Metro) district and Kaliabor in the Nagaon district. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi also addressed a poll rally in Dimoria and Chandrapur, on the outskirts of Guwahati. State Congress president Bhupen Borah addressed several poll rallies in Barpeta and Bongaigaon districts.
