Guwahati: The Assam Police has issued a warning on Synthetic Media, or AI-generated fake media, which it says has the potential to mislead and harm. Among kids, it may lead to bullying and false accusations, spread misinformation and fraud in schools, and impersonation and harassment for adults.
In the post on social media, the Assam Police explains synthetic media as referring to any content—images, videos, audio, or text—created or altered using AI (artificial intelligence). While it has creative uses, it can also be misused to manipulate reality, spread misinformation, and deceive audiences, it is stated.
On the potential harm to adults, it says that AI-generated content can impersonate individuals, spread false information, and fuel online harassment. There is the advice to stay alert and question before trusting.
For schools, it is advised that fake videos and messages can lead to cyberbullying, academic fraud, and false accusations. Educate students to verify before they believe—is the message.
For parents, the Assam Police has some solid advice—protect your child’s online presence. One should review privacy settings and limited app permissions and teach them to recognize synthetic content—is the advice.
Some examples of synthetic media are deepfakes, which are highly realistic videos or audio that are created to mimic real people or events; AI-generated music, or music created using AI; text generation, or text created using AI and voice synthesis; and voice created using AI. Synthetic media is used primarily to mislead people or change the meaning of original content.
