GUWAHATI: With the Government of India drawing a new four-lane road from Phulbari-Shillong in Meghalaya, the ongoing Dhubri (Assam) to Phulbari (Meghalaya) bridge project has become an indispensable one. The PMO (Prime Minister's Office) is monitoring the bridge project.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways entrusted this bridge project to the NHIDCL (National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd.), which awarded the project construction work to Larsen and Toubro (L&T) Ltd. The NHIDCL sets the deadline for the completion of the bridge project by September 2028.

According to sources, as of April 30, 2025, 60.8 percent of the project has been completed.

The total length of the entire project, including the approach roads, is 19.28 km, with a total project cost of Rs 4,997 crore. The actual length of the bridge over the Brahmaputra is 12.62 km.

This project is crucial for road communication in the lower Assam districts and the neighbouring state of Meghalaya. The bridge project will connect Dhubri on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra with Phulbari in Meghalaya on the south bank of the river on NH 127 B. Currently, only river vessels, like boats and ferries, operate between the two places on opposite sides of the Red River. Anyone intending to travel by road from Dhubri to Phulbari or vice versa, as well as to Mankachar and South Salmara in southwestern Assam, has to travel via the Goalpara and Bongaigaon districts, which increases travel time by several hours. After completion of the bridge, the travel time between the two points will be just 35-40 minutes.

NHIDCL has already floated the tender for the feasibility study and the preparation of the DPR of the proposed four-lane road from Phulbari-Shillong.
