Guwahati: A one-day session of the Assam Legislative Assembly will be held on Monday, June 9, to rename Dibrugarh Airport as Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika Airport, Dibrugarh. Towards this primary purpose, the state assembly is expected to pass a resolution and forward it to the Government of India.
The renaming of the domestic airport at Mohanbari, at a distance of 15 km from the town of Dibrugarh, is being done in consonance with the one-year celebration of the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika, who is also known as the ‘Bard of the Brahmaputra’.
The Assam cabinet had earlier accorded approval to the renaming of the airport in honour of the Xudhakantha.
A discussion is also slated to take place regarding Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika.
With the renaming of the Dibrugarh Airport, both the Guwahati and Dibrugarh airports will be named in honour of two stalwarts of the state, who were both posthumously honoured with the titles of Bharat Ratna—the highest civilian award in the country. The airport at Guwahati’s Borjhar is known as Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, in honour of former Assam chief minister Bharat Ratna ‘Lokapriya’ Gopinath Bordoloi.
