Guwahati: The Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) is all set for the counting day of the Assam Panchayat election on Sunday, May 11. ASEC has already issued guidelines to district commissioners in 27 districts for the counting process of ballots from the two phases of polling held on May 2 and 7.
Interestingly, not a single nomination paper was filed by any candidate for election as members in 33 Gaon Panchayats (GPs). ASEC sources stated that a separate election may be held for members in the 33 GPs.
A source in the ASEC said that the counting of ballots will start from 8 am on Sunday. Training has already been provided to the officials engaged for the counting process. It will take some time for the results to emerge, as the election was conducted through the use of ballots.
The election to membership of Anchalik Panchayats (APs) and Zilla Parishads was political in nature, and candidates were allowed to use their respective party symbols. There are 397 Zilla Parishad (ZP) constituencies in the state. Of these, BJP candidates won uncontested in 35 ZP constituencies, while AGP candidates secured uncontested wins in 2 ZP constituencies. In the case of APs, there is a total of 2192 constituencies.
