Guwahati: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday arrested two employees of the Income Tax department at Silchar for accepting a bribe. The duo was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 4,000, as part of the demanded bribe amount of Rs 10,000.
The CBI had registered a case on Friday (Nov 29) on the basis of a complaint against two employees of the IT department at Silchar in the Cachar district of Assam. The duo had demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 for the closure/surrender of a PAN number, which was one of two PAN cards issued in the name of the complainant's aunt. She had already applied for the same at the IT department in Silchar. It was alleged that the complainant was later directed to pay a part amount of Rs 4,000.
CBI sleuths laid a trap and caught the first accused working in Group D (T.S.) of the IT department at Silchar. The other accused, working as a notice server in Group C of ITO Ward No. 1 at Silchar, was also apprehended for demanding the bribe.
The arrested duo was later produced before the Special Judge (CBI) at Guwahati on Saturday. The CBI also conducted searches at the residential premises of both accused persons.
