BONGAIGAON: Bongaigaon Police demolished a Madrasa today for alleged involvement in Jihadi activities. The development came close on the heels of the demolition of Madrassas, one each in the Morigaon and Barpeta districts.

The madrassa – Marakjul Ma-Arif Kwariyana – was at Kabaitari village under Jogighopa police station.

Acting as a tip-off, the administration evacuated the Madrassa last night by taking the students to other locations. Police sources revealed that they seized several incriminating documents relating to antinational activities from the Madrassa during the operation.

Talking to the media, SP Swapnaneel Deka said that there were two reasons behind the demolition of the Madrassa. "As per District Disaster Management Authority's report, the construction of the building was poor and risky for living. Its quality was not according to the PWD guidelines. It is one reason for the demolition of this building. On the other hand, we received several proofs of the Jihadi link to this Madrassa. It was acting like a Jihadi training centre. Hence, we conducted a search operation here. However, we will not conduct any operation on the Mosque nearby as there is no such allegation against it," the SP said.

A teacher of the Madrasa, Hafizul Islam, was earlier arrested by the Goalpara police. The teacher was brought to the Madrasa today by Goalpara police during the search operation. As per police sources, they recovered several documents from the canteen of the Madrasa based on Islam's confession.

A source said that the seized documents had links to banned organizations 'Ansarullah Bangla Team' and 'Al-Qaeda'.

SP said that there might be more jihadi modules operating in the district. "If there are more jihadi modules, we will bust them," he said.
