Cash-for-result scam: Two arrested in Kamrup district

GUWAHATI: Rigorous raids and grilling on the cash-for-result scam in the Kamrup district since Saturday led to the arrest of two persons, besides the seizure of cash, some laptops and other incriminating documents.

They arrested two are Major top HS School Principal Akkash Ali and data entry operator Prashanta Das. He was working in the office of the Inspector of Schools (IS), Kamrup.

According to the police, on Saturday they raided simultaneously the office of the Inspector of Schools (IS), the residence of Kasturba High School's headmistress Debojani Deka, the office and residence of Majortop HS School Principal Akkash Ali, the office and residence of Goroimari Anchalik Suwali High School's Headmaster Dost Habibur Rahman and the Dakshin Hati residence of Prashanta Das. The police also grilled SEBA coordinator Phool Pahi Nath and a fourth-grade employee of School Inspector's office Siveswar Kalita. The police recovered Rs 2,18,970 from Prashanta Das' residence and Rs 17,050 from his office.

The police registered a suo motto case against this at Changsari Police Station (329/21 u/s 120(B) 465/466/471/119 IPC). The police are still grilling Inspector of Schools, Kamrup Madhab Deka.

According to the police, Akkash Ali did communicate with the headmasters of several schools and used the name of the Inspector of Schools. The police feel that the situation demands more grilling of the Inspector of Schools.

The police sniffed the occurrences of such incidents in other districts of the State as well and cautioned the respective SPs.

Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "This is sad news that transactions of cash took place in the office of the Inspector of Schools, Kamrup. We had tip-offs and based on that the police took action. Other Inspectors of Schools are also under our radar. The government will act tough if any such anomalies occur."

AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath said, "It's an unpardonable crime, more serious than drug trafficking. We demand stringent punishment through proper investigation."
