GUWAHATI/BONGAIGAON: Certain jihadi activities in Assam are being controlled from Bhopal, said Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta.

While talking to media persons today about the jihadi terror shadow which was looming over the State, the DGP said that Assam Police received information about some jihadis being caught in Bhopal who had links with Assam. "We have interrogated them, We have also taken some people in Tripura into custody who have jihadi links in Assam," said Mahanta.

He said that jihadis were trying to set up a base in Assam. "Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) is a dangerous organization. Jihadi outfits having links with AQIS are trying to indoctrinate people here. But Assam Police is determined to stop such jihadi activities. We have taken steps to maintain vigil in some districts. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has instructed us to be on alert and is himself monitoring the situation," said the DGP.

Meanwhile, continuing the crackdown against the terror activity in the State, Bongaigaon police took over custody of three jihadis from Tripura police today. The three jihadis have been identified as Abdul Kasem, Hamid Ali and Imran Hussein from Tripura. They were arrested in Agartala by Assam Police in association with Tripura police for their alleged connection with the Bangladesh-based outfit Ansarullah Bangla, an Islamic Jihadi group, which is a wing of Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).

Talking to media persons, Swapnaneel Deka, Bongaigaon Superintendent of Police, said that police were in search of these three jihadis for a long time after their identification was established during the interrogation of a few other jihadis arrested by Barpeta police on April 16, 2022. "These three were in Bongaigaon for about two months in November and December last year and were recruiting for their organization in areas like Jogighopa, Kabaitari etc. Few locals are also involved with them and we are in search of them. Agartala police (Jatrapur PS) had handed them over to us and we brought them to Bongaigaon today morning. We will produce them in the court and take them in remand for further interrogation," he said.

A case had been registered at Jogighopa PS of Bongahaon district (Case No 56/22). "These three were acting like sleeper cell cadres and were operating in the lower part of Assam," the SP added.
