GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma favoured the introduction of the uniform civil code in India for the interests of the mothers and sisters belonging to the Islamic faith. He also spoke on a slew of other issues, besides renewing his appeal to the ULFA-I to come forward for peace talks.

Talking to the media today, the Chief Minister said, "In the absence of a uniform civil code, a male belonging to the Islamic faith can opt for polygamy, depriving the women of their fundamental rights. In the interests of the mothers and sisters belonging to the Islamic faith, a uniform civil code is a must in the nation to end polygamy. The Hindu marriage law has no such problems. The Islamic faith also doesn't favour multiple marriages. However, the Muslim Personal Law permits three or four marriages by a male. We need to stop this practice to protect the interests of Muslim mothers and sisters."

The Chief Minister renewed his appeal to the ULFA-I for peace talks. He said, "The people of Assam want peace. In this Bohag, I appeal to the ULFA-I leadership to come forward for peace talks. We can solve all problems by sitting across the table."

When asked about the reports of a few youths joining the ULFA-I in the recent past, the Chief Minister said, "As the Chief Minister, I can never support youths joining the ULFA-I. Some of such youths have left their infants, wives and old parents. The ULFA should make an announcement asking the youths not to desert their infants, wives and old parents to join the outfit."

When asked about the reshuffle/expansion of his ministry, the Chief Minister said, "I have not thought about it yet. The ministry expansion will take place if I think it necessary." Five berths are lying vacant in the State Cabinet.

On completion of one year of his government, he said, "Union Home Minister Amit Shah will arrive in the state on May 10, and address a BJP rally in Guwahati. In the morning on the same day, he will present the President's Colour Award to the Assam Police. He will lay the foundation stones of the National Forensic Institute, a super speciality hospital on the GMCH premises, a new police reserve in Guwahati, the office of the Guwahati Police Commissioner, the office of the Kamrup Deputy Commissioner and an auditorium with the capacity of 3,000 seats on the same day."
